The City of Dubai chose a joint venture between Hitachi Zosen Inova and BESIX (Belgium) to build the biggest EfW plant in the world. The two companies are general contractors for the turnkey plant, as well as serving as operators and minority shareholders in the project company for 35 years. It’s not just the size of the plant that’s impressive: net energy efficiency of more than 31% also puts it at the very top of the international rankings. Delivery of the project is a key componentof Dubai’s sustainability strategy.

Turkey’s first EfW plant will also be the largest in Europe. Located right next to Istanbul Airport, the plant, which commences operation in 2021, will have three lines thermally treating 15% of the solid municipal waste to generate 70 Mwel of electricity. Construction of the plant is creating value in the region, with more than a fifth of all components manufactured by local companies and the construction itself relying 100% on local workers.
